Be Aware of Your Sunscreen

We need to be aware of what sunscreen we are buying and applying. Over the last couple years the FDA has been doing research into the chemicals involved in sunscreen. They have encouraged the use of sunscreen while research is being conducted because ultimately sun related problems are still a much higher risk than anything that they are looking into. However, there are multiple chemicals in sunscreen that have shown results indicating that they may be harmful.

There are two different types of sunscreen available. There are chemical sunscreens and physical (mineral based) sunscreen. In the chemical sunscreen you should watch out for Oxybenzone and Octinoxate (Octyl methoxycinnamate). There are a few other chemicals that are being looked into in chemical sunscreen, but these two have been identified as potentially large contributors to specific health risks. While research on these chemicals are continuing they may be disrupting hormones. There have been studies that have supported that these chemicals can affect the structure and size of the mammary gland, or a delayed onset of puberty. Again, these chemicals are still being tested but be careful with the chemicals you are putting on.

Physical sunscreen works in a completely different way than chemical sunscreen and actually reflects light rather than absorbing the light. This sunscreen will often leave a visible coating on the skin. These sunscreens often do not have the chemicals that were previously mentioned. They do often contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which have concerns with inhalation but are considered much safer on the skin.

Be careful with the chemicals that you put on your skin and stay safe this summer while you enjoy all the fun outdoor activities!

Job Shadow Experience at a Nuclear Pharmacy

I recently had the opportunity to go and job shadow at a nuclear pharmacy! As a future pharmacy student I have been looking at potential options of careers to work towards. I was told about this nuclear pharmacy and knew that I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to learn more and my interests have been piqued. Radiopharmaceuticals is such a unique and new form of medicine that can be used in so many different ways. At first, the thought of nuclear medicine might sound scary but what I learned is that it can be really useful and really quite safe. Every moment I was job shadowing I felt secure, and I noticed that there were numerous checks on the medicine itself. I also learned a lot about what goes on in a nuclear pharmacy. The labs they use are pressurized and sterile to ensure safety and purity. All of the containers are made of lead which means that they can be surprisingly heavy! The nuclear pharmacist started early in the morning (around 1 am) mixing radioactive isotopes with medicine that targets specific parts of the body. These containers holding these mixtures were then sealed and the purity of the samples were tested. Once the medicine was ready and correctly labeled it was prepared to be shipped to hospitals in the surrounding area. I don’t know all of the details of why things were used or how everything works yet. But what I learned is that nuclear pharmacy is safe and really cool! Keep a lookout for an upcoming podcast from the CEWT team on pharmacy technicians and their role in the healthcare industry.

Potential Pharmacy Specialties

R. Keegan Barfuss on May 1, 2025 2:20:34 PM

Did you know that there are more pharmacy jobs than working in a retail pharmacy? There are so many options and specialties that pharmacists can choose from. The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) recognizes over 62,250 pharmacist certifications across 15 different specialties. These specialties include ambulatory care, cardiology, compound sterile preparations, critical care, emergency medicine, geriatric, infectious diseases, nuclear, nutrition support, oncology, pain management, pediatric, pharmacotherapy, psychiatric, and solid organ transplant. Pharmacists can specialize in these specialties to offer very specific care to patients and support to medical teams.

1. Ambulatory Care Pharmacy

Ambulatory care pharmacists focus on providing medically advanced care to ambulatory patients. They treat patients outside of a hospital setting and often work with a medical team to provide care like in a health clinic or community pharmacy. They manage patients' medications, monitor medication safety, and make medication recommendations to patients.

2. Cardiology Pharmacy

Cardiology pharmacists specialize in working with patients with cardiovascular disease. They ensure and monitor the medications a patient is taking to treat heart failure and other cardiovascular conditions. They focus directly on how medications can support patients struggling with heart conditions.

3. Compound Sterile Preparations Pharmacy

Compound sterile preparations pharmacists specialize in preparing medications in sterile environments. There are many medications that must be created in an extremely careful manner, and these pharmacists create medications in very precise measurements and in a sterile environment that eliminates the opportunity for contamination.

4. Critical Care Pharmacy

Critical care pharmacists modify and monitor medications given to critically ill patients. They often offer specialized care for patients that have very specific needs with the goal to improve patient outcomes. They often work with a team of specialists in intensive care units.

5. Emergency Medicine Pharmacy

Emergency medicine pharmacists generally work in emergency departments to give quick and accessible care to people in immediate need. They work with other healthcare professionals to provide quick and accurate care.

6. Geriatric Pharmacy

Geriatric pharmacists focus on medication therapy and treatments for older patients. Getting old is tough and can come with many health issues all at the same time. These pharmacists specialize in special care for older patients and the difficulties they may face.

7. Infectious Diseases Pharmacy

Infectious disease pharmacists focus on preventing, identifying, and treating infectious diseases. They often work with a team of microbiologists to optimize antibiotic use and to monitor patient response to medication therapy.

8. Nuclear Pharmacy

Nuclear pharmacists specialize in the preparation and usage of radiopharmaceuticals to treat patients. They safely create radioactive medications that can be used for molecular imaging and therapy. Radiopharmaceuticals can be used to treat cancer and to show organ functionality as well.

9. Nutrition Support Pharmacy

Nutrition support pharmacists specialize in identifying and treating nutritional deficiencies. They design and modify nutritional plans to help patients live healthier lives and give support to the body. They often work directly with patients to provide recommendations and support to the patient.

10. Oncology Pharmacy

Oncology pharmacists specialize in the treatment of cancer patients. They manage and monitor nonradioactive medicine that the patient takes to optimize the patient's treatment plan. These pharmacists also collaborate with many other health care providers to ensure the best outcome for each patient.

11. Pain Management Pharmacy

Pain management pharmacists work with health teams to create pain management plans for patients struggling with a wide variety of sources of pain. They monitor and adapt plans to best support patients based on their patients' pain level and needs.

12. Pediatric Pharmacy

Pediatric pharmacists specialize in changing dosage and treatment plans for children. They often factor age, weight, and other factors into treatment plans to optimize results for their patients. They are important personnel to have on health care teams to provide and adjust to younger patients.

13. Pharmacotherapy

Pharmacotherapy pharmacists focus on the effective use of medications for patients. They work directly with patients to create, organize, and manage patient medication plans. They often work in clinics on healthcare teams to optimize medication therapy plans to their full potential.

14. Psychiatric Pharmacy

Psychiatric pharmacists specialize in the medication treatment for patients with mental illnesses. They optimize pharmacotherapeutic plans to support and reduce the effects of neurological disorders.

15. Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy

Solid Organ Transplant pharmacists support people who donate, receive or are candidates for organ transplants. This is a very specific field that looks over the medication therapy for these patients.

Pharmacy specialties are so important to the medical world. These specialties are used every day to maximize the benefit of medication and treatment plans. Pharmacists are very needed in the world today. ISU offers pharmacy and pharmacy tech programs. If this has piqued your interest, check them out!

Although, they still could not legally partake in "gay behavior," such as holding hands or dancing together. Police would often harass gay bars and bars operating without a liquor license (usually owned by the Mafia).

The Origins of Easter

Easter has been around for centuries, but it wasn't always the chocolate egg-filled holiday we know today. Let's find out how this holiday grew into what we know today.

The earliest record found celebrating Easter comes from the 2nd century (over 1800 years ago). Bede the Venerable (an English Monk) from the 8th century thought the word may derive from Eostre (or Eostrae), a goddess of spring and fertility in Anglo-Saxon culture.

Like many people, I had no idea what St. Patrick’s Day celebrated. According to this poll conducted by Tullamore Dew (a leading Irish whiskey brand), out of 2143 people (21+), less than half knew St. Patrick was a patron saint of Ireland.

Other findings from the poll include:

  • Only 25% of participants knew St. Patrick was NOT born in Ireland (he was born in Britain)
  • 34% of participants thought the holiday celebrated the day of his birthday instead of marking the day of his death
  • Around 25% of participants believe St. Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland (based on the myth)

Some people enjoy having a couple of goals to start the year. Others don't see a point in following the common tradition of setting New Year's Resolutions. I'm in the latter category. Even though I do think it's a good idea to set goals and to have ambitions, a lot of people tend to set unrealistic standards right off the bat. This could be counteractive to the whole point of resolutions and discourage people from completing them at all. That isn't to say that resolutions aren't a good idea for anyone it just means there are pros and cons to them.

The United Way of Southeastern Idaho’s annual giving campaign has evolved into something more than a simple workplace fundraiser; it's a chance for individuals, businesses, and organizations to join forces with UW and bolster the most passionate, efficient, and resourceful nonprofits in our region. At the heart of this campaign are the countless success stories that unfold in local households along familiar streets, all thanks to community contributions that simply sustain the necessities that empower families and individuals to navigate challenges and forge ahead on a path to financial stability.

I am in the throws of trying to re-landscape my yard. This was not a project I necessarily took on by choice. My yard had become infested with weeds and after a few summers of trying to rid my yard of them, I gave up and dug everything up.

As fall approaches and winter looms around the corner I find myself in a race against time. I have so much to do to prepare my lawn (and home) for winter. Below are a few tips of things to make sure you don’t forget to take care of before winter begins.

Welcome Back

This past Monday summer hours for ISU’s staff ended. For those not “in the know” summer hours are midfield working hours during the summer semester. Summer hours see us working from 7:30 am-4:00 pm with a half-hour lunch. The schedule change to the traditional 8:00 am-5:00 pm (with a one-hour lunch break) is a reminder that students will return to campus.

I look forward to the start of the fall semester. Our building is quiet without the bustle of students who fill our halls and break areas during the school year. In the fall, our student employees return, and with them, their eagerness to learn.

As we welcome our transfer and freshman students to campus, don’t forget that they may be unfamiliar with resources and clubs on camps.  Below you will find links to a few resources on campus.

Our department covers workforce courses such as apprenticeships, customized training, and health programs. These programs are designed to give students the skills they need to start a new career. Other courses we offer include professional development, culinary, and skills development classes. These classes make up the Continuing Education portion of our offerings.

Our Continuing Education courses are not designed to move a student into a new career but they can upskill a student's resume. Courses such as our Excel and Quickbooks classes are valuable upskilling offerings.

As you may be aware, our Fall 2023 Catalog is hitting mailboxes soon and is up online now. If you are interested in changing careers, we encourage you to enroll in one of our programs or reach out to us directly.

For those interested in taking one of our Continuing Education classes, I have listed some of the benefits of lifelong learning below.

The Ultimate Guide to Travel Hacks: How to Explore the World Safely on a Budget

I was 24 years old when I traveled outside of my home country for the first time. On a whim, I decided to travel to Europe with another young woman, a girl I barely knew—mutual friends, studying abroad in Malta was the catalyst for our decision to book a flight to Europe (and visit them along the way).

Europe was the first continent I got to scratch off of the map. It was this trip that spurred my love of travel and although it has been almost 20 years since I stepped on the plane that carried me there, it remains the trip that brings about the most sensory memory to me when I think back on it. Sometimes I can still smell the hint of perfume that lingered in the air, hear the rush of the small cars, trains, and Vespas as they moved past, and feel the Vencian air. Out of the three countries we visited, Italy remains the most vivid in my memory.

The Games We Play: A Look at Why We Play Games.

This is CEWT’s third post and second blog post in our Games Series. Our last blog post focused on the history of games. This week’s blog will focus on the ‘why’ of playing games. But first, I want to give our readers a bit of context on our ‘why’. Why is a continuing education and workforce training program writing about games? This answer is simple…and maybe a bit complicated.

The simple part is much easier to explain so let's start there. We are writing about games because of the people who work here, and because it does relate to our work but we’ll visit that later on in this article. For now, let’s focus on CEWT’s employees.

Games anyone? A Look at the Past, Present, and Future of Games.

Games have been around for over a millennium. This issue of the CEWT blog will focus on the evolution of games.

The oldest playable board game in the world, The Royal Game of Ur, dates back 4,600 years. Its gameplay rules were found written on a cuneiform tablet (dating to 177 BC) and deciphered by curator Irving Finkel. While The Royal Game of Ur is the oldest playable board game known to man, it is not the oldest game in existence. The gameplay rules of many ancient games are lost to history. We know the games exist, we just don’t know how to play them. Senet, a game dating back to 3,100 B.C is one of the earliest known games1. A favorite of King Tut and Queen Nefertari, Senet rules do exist for modern play, but the rules are reconstructed and many variations exist2. It should be noted that royalty’s love of games was not limited to the Egyptians.
