2023 is finally here, which means a new year full of opportunities for all of us. The start of the new year is when most people like to set resolutions for themselves to achieve their goals, but it is also the time of year where many people do not follow through with their resolutions.
New Year’s resolutions are known for being short-lived, with many resolutions typically ‘failing’ after a certain amount of time. Why exactly do New Year’s resolutions fail? There’s a few reasons behind this:
- A Change of habits and lifestyle. Change is hard for many people, so having to make major changes to the way we live is difficult.
- Lack of accountability. Accountability is detrimental to achieving long-term goals. Not staying accountable leaves room for excuses and changing the desired outcome of the goals for our convenience.
Oftentimes, the goals and resolutions that people make are larger than what is actually attainable. The larger the goal, the larger the challenge, and with that comes many more changes that have to be made in order to achieve the desired goal- which leads to us not reaching our goals, as mentioned above.
With this being said, here are some ways that you can set forth with positive intentions to achieve your goals going forward into 2023!
Think small and simple
More often than not, we overcomplicate things. We often see New Year’s resolutions as grand gestures of forward momentum for reaching our goals. However, this can be harmful for actually fulfilling our resolutions. Instead, setting smaller and more attainable goals is good for keeping consistency for a longer period of time, and actually seeing results much quicker.
Make a plan and stick to it
Outlining a plan is a good way to visualize what you can do to reach your goals. Making a plan allows you to pace yourself yet put in the effort to work hard at the same time. A good way to track your progress is by writing down the details of what you are wanting to accomplish to achieve your goals.
Track your progress
Each win is huge in the grand scheme of things, even those that seem miniscule. Keeping track of your progress is a good way to see how much you have put in, and exactly how much you are getting in return. Whether you decide to document your progress through pictures, journaling, or art (just to name a few), tracking progress can shift your perspective while working towards your resolutions.
Be patient with yourself
We have all heard the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” While this phrase can be interpreted in many ways, it is very fitting for focusing on bettering ourselves. In regards to New Year’s resolutions, or any personal goal for that matter, being patient and staying consistent will be best for seeing results.
Going into 2023, set yourself up for success with your New Year’s resolutions. The new year is all about fresh starts and new opportunities, and your goals should reflect that.
