We need to be aware of what sunscreen we are buying and applying. Over the last couple years the FDA has been doing research into the chemicals involved in sunscreen. They have encouraged the use of sunscreen while research is being conducted because ultimately sun related problems are still a much higher risk than anything that they are looking into. However, there are multiple chemicals in sunscreen that have shown results indicating that they may be harmful.
There are two different types of sunscreen available. There are chemical sunscreens and physical (mineral based) sunscreen. In the chemical sunscreen you should watch out for Oxybenzone and Octinoxate (Octyl methoxycinnamate). There are a few other chemicals that are being looked into in chemical sunscreen, but these two have been identified as potentially large contributors to specific health risks. While research on these chemicals are continuing they may be disrupting hormones. There have been studies that have supported that these chemicals can affect the structure and size of the mammary gland, or a delayed onset of puberty. Again, these chemicals are still being tested but be careful with the chemicals you are putting on.
Physical sunscreen works in a completely different way than chemical sunscreen and actually reflects light rather than absorbing the light. This sunscreen will often leave a visible coating on the skin. These sunscreens often do not have the chemicals that were previously mentioned. They do often contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which have concerns with inhalation but are considered much safer on the skin.
Be careful with the chemicals that you put on your skin and stay safe this summer while you enjoy all the fun outdoor activities!
